In a recent blog article by jody dean–an astute american academic who is of the left–she laments that the right has seized even the very language of left discourse. and thus the left is left anxious as it loses the game to the other side. the same scenario is described by zizek in his plague of fantasies (1997) as he claims that the two major figures in politics (at least in academic discourse) are the fool and the knave. the knave is of the right and would even kill just so change never happens. the fool, in the so-called post-socialist condition, is the deconstructionist who knows very well how this system does not work but would not do anything to actually bring it down. Thus, conservatism and cynicism are the two dominant dispositions that academics or even citizens identify with. But so much for that late 90s’ bad bad news. While that may still apply to the academe, I venture that this sordid moment is soon to be over, if not over.
Howard Zinn’s statement is closer to what we (the left) has become after that graceful fall. Thanks to the split for now we witness how those “pockets of resistance” that we joined as kids have consolidated an ever growing mass movement. Some people say that Zinn’s stakes are still utopian. We know better than that. Our dream is happening! Long live our battle cry!
